Investors Key to Mitigating the Climate Emergency

30 September 2019 – EN+ GROUP IPJSC (the “Company”, “the Group” or “En+ Group”) (LSE: ENPL; MOEX: ENPL), the world’s largest producer of low carbon aluminium, co-hosted an investor focused ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) breakfast with Citi (NYSE: C) to mark 2019 United Nations Climate Week.

The panel discussion, “Climate Emergency: Will Investors Step Up?” addressed crucial questions about the role of investors in moving the private sector towards a net zero economy, and was moderated by Joan MacNaughton, one of the new Independent Directors of En+ Group and Chair of The Climate Group.

Leaders representing government and NGOs joined the discussion. Key takeaways were:

  • Governments alone cannot drive the world to net zero by 2050. Radically stepped-up engagement by investors and the private sector is necessary. However, the Climate Action Summit this week felt like a pivot in terms of the willingness of both investors and business to engage seriously and be a part of a global solution. This could be a tipping point;
  • ESG has assumed substantially greater importance with the overwhelming majority of intuitional investors in the past 12 months. This is an unstoppable trend, not a fad; and
  • Financing for the transition to a low carbon economy is increasingly available in developed economies but remains challenging in crucial emerging economies. There will continue to be a need for scaled up public sector finance to mitigate a whole range of financial risks.

The panel was comprised of: Charlie Ogilvie, Director of Strategy for COP26; The Hon. Daryl Vaz, Minister without Portfolio for Jamaica; Keith Tuffley, Managing Director & Vice Chairman, Senior International Advisor, Citi Banking, Capital Markets and Advisory; and Adnan Amin, founder of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and Chairman of the Environmental Advisory Board, En+ Group.

Opening and closing remarks were delivered by Lord Barker of Battle, Executive Chairman of En+ Group.
