The smelter was launched in 1985 near the Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP, one of the largest hydroelectric power plants in the world.

The Group's history began at SAZ in 1997, when Oleg Deripaska, then the plant's CEO, created of the first vertically integrated industrial company in Russia. This company, called Siberian Aluminium, went on to bring together some of the largest Russian facilities in metals and mining.

SAZ comprises four potlines and one casthouse. The plant uses the most environmentally friendly technology with pre-baked anodes. It serves as a testing ground for RUSAL's innovative technologies and how to implement them. The Company has been using the energy-efficient and environmentally friendly RA-550 heavy-duty pots effectively for years. These pots were first installed in the pilot pothouse of the Sayanogorsk Aluminium Smelter.

The Sayanogorsk Aluminium Smelter is the largest producer of aluminium alloys in Russia. It has a capacity of 375,000 metric tonnes, accounting for 70% of total domestic production.
