The smelter's first production facilities were commissioned and launched in 1966. In 2008, BrAZ became the first aluminium smelter in the world to produce over 1 million metric tonnes of metal in a year. The smelter makes primary aluminium and alloys, and is constantly expanding its product range.

Bratsk HPP supplies energy to BrAZ.

The plant is currently undergoing a major environmental re-equipment project. This includes switching to Green Soderberg technology and installing highly efficient gas treatment units to reduce the environmental impact. By the end of 2024, 1,087 of the plant's pots have been converted to Green Soderberg. In addition, 11 potrooms have been fully equipped with a centralised alumina distribution system, and 13 of the latest dry gas treatment units with an efficiency of over 99% have been commissioned.

In 2023, construction began on two new, highly environmentally friendly potrooms. They will operate using the pre-baked anode technology. This will result in a ten-fold reduction in fluoride emissions and eliminate all emissions of benz(a)pyrene. The new facility will be outfitted with RA-550 pots. The two new potrooms will replace half the capacity of BrAZ's existing facilities.
